If you’re considering Botox, or its competing brand Dysport, both known generically as neuromodulators, then you will want to understand just how these cosmetic treatments work.

Botox is practically a household name. Though its discovery dates back to the 1920s, its modern reputation for turning back the clock on aging and providing relief for a myriad of conditions only spans about two decades. For all its celebrity, most people aren’t quite sure what Botox does, but what many do know–it works when artfully applied.

What is a Neuromodulator?

As you may recall from biology class, neurotransmitters stimulate neighboring neurons or muscle or gland cells, allowing impulses to be passed from one cell to the next throughout the nervous system. The scientific definition of a neuromodulator is best described through its interactive role with neurotransmitters. Neuromodulators are substances that enhance the excitatory or inhibitory responses of ion-channel receptors when acting with neurotransmitters. Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators that enhance the inhibitory function of muscle receptors, weakening the muscle and preventing movement. When one of these cosmetic treatments is injected into a muscle, the muscle becomes weak and cannot contract.

What do Neuromodulators Treat?

Neuromodulators, like Botox and Dysport, can treat a wide range of conditions caused by overactive muscles or muscle spasms, as well as the well-known application for the treatment of dynamic expression lines of the face.

Research suggests that neuromodulators may treat eye spasms, bruxism (teeth grinding), overactive bladder, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), incontinence, and, most commonly, fine lines and wrinkles caused by dynamic expression lines, typically on the face.

How Do You Know if You’re a Candidate For Neuromodulators?

While Botox and Dysport are highly recommended for a variety of conditions, the decision to use the treatments should be made in partnership with your medical care team.

For example, when seeking treatment for facial wrinkles and fine lines, some cases may be better served with fillers or a combination of filler and neuromodulators. An experienced practitioner will discuss your concerns, aesthetic goals, and medical history to develop the best treatment plan. There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to managing your appearance–that’s why it is important to select an expert provider.
