Smarter Hair Loss Treatment

A human scalp has about 100,000 hairs and it’s not unusual to lose a few of these every day. However, when there are more and more lost hairs found in the shower or in the brush every day, men and women start to worry about a permanent loss of hair.

Every year, billions of dollars are spent on hair treatments and restoration products and, while this might make the user feel better about the problem, most of these treatments do not treat the root cause. Terri Suresh DeNeui, an acute care nurse practitioner and the founder of Hormonal Health, Wellness and Aesthetic Centers, has treated thousands of patients who have lost or are losing their hair and she has some insights about this process and how it might be reversed.

What are the Factors Which Can Cause Hair Loss?

“There are several reasons for hair loss,” Terri noted. “And they’re different for men and women.”

“Typically, men have what’s called male-pattern baldness. Hair follicles in the temple and crown area are susceptible to a hormone called DHT. This hormone can ‘shock’ the hair follicles, they die and hair never grows back. That type of hair loss is really easy to restore with some modalities.”

“For women, it’s a lot different,” she said. “Women are susceptible to hair loss due to hormone imbalance, nutritional deficiency and stress – especially stress. When I’m referring to ‘hormone deficiency’ I’m not just talking about the thyroid, but also those hormone fluctuations which women experience when they reach their 40’s or after childbirth.”

“These can be balanced, but it takes experience to evaluate the thyroid labs, which often appear to be normal, but in fact have all of the symptoms of thyroid deficiency – hair loss, cold hands and feet and weight gain – because these deficiencies are on the tissue level and this does not show up with blood analysis.”

What about Nutrition?

“Once we get the hormones in balance, and there is still a hair-loss issue, it is typically a nutrition deficiency,” Terri noted.  “Ferritin is a very key mineral that we look at closely because if levels of this mineral are low, the thyroid can’t function properly.”

“One thing we’re seeing a lot of is hair loss after surgery,” she said. “A lot of people don’t realize that the hair loss or scalp problems can happen 6, 8 or 9 months down the road after surgery. We also see hair loss in patients who go through extreme dietary changes as a result of bariatric surgery and subsequent weight-loss. This is also related to nutrition deficiency.”

Correcting Hair Loss in Men with Neograft

“NeoGraft” is a phenomenal technology for correcting hair-loss in men” Terri notes. “Basically, the machine called a ‘NeoGraft’ is used to harvest hair from the back of the head. For men with male-pattern baldness, the hair is only lost in the temples and crown while typically the back of the head has hair that is thick and beautiful. This is because those hair follicles are not affected by DHT.”

“When these follicles are extracted – one by one – by a highly trained Neografter (we use practitioners who have had 8 to 10 years of experience with this process), they are transplanted into the crown and temple areas where the hair loss has occurred. The amazing thing about this process is that the DNA of these transplanted follicles doesn’t ‘know’ that it is now on the crown of the head. It just grows like it did when it was in the back of the head! This can be a permanent solution for men. “

Dallas businessman and graphic artist, Austin Lewis (whose “before and after” photos are seen here) is unequivocal about the effects of NeoGraft.

“This changed my life!”

“Since my hair had been thinning for some time, I had always gotten a buzz cut,” Lewis said. “To tell the truth, I was very self-conscious about my hair. Once I had the procedure in 2014, my demeanor changed dramatically. I am now much more confident about my appearance and my self-esteem is better than it has ever been.”

“Another excellent solution for hair loss for both men and women is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, “Terri noted. “We often use PRP in conjunction with NeoGraft, or by itself. PRP is primarily used for thinning hair, so there must be hair follicles in place. It gives nutrition and revitalizes those hair follicles to grow into thick, beautiful hair.”

“This therapy, using the patient’s own blood, is an excellent way to restore hair in women,” Terri added.

What about Folk Medicine Treatments for Treating Hair Loss?

Perhaps, one’s grandma believed that such treatments as applying apple cider vinegar to the scalp would restore lost hair. Is this possible?

“I’m really more about ‘evidence-based medicine,” Terri chuckled. “There are a lot of home remedies and some of them might work. However, in this instance, I suspect that grandma was just helping us to restore some nutrients to the hair follicles – apple cider vinegar has a lot of amazing benefits for the body – but I haven’t really seen the studies on the folk medicine remedy.”

When Should You be Concerned about Hair Loss?

“Women tend to watch this closer than men,” she said. “They will come into our clinic and say that their hairdresser is noticing that their hair is thinning. Typically, that hairdresser or barber knows their head of hair better than we do and if they make this comment, that’s something to pay attention to.”

“If someone is seeing a lot of hair in the shower, for example, there is likely something shocking the system, there might be some nutritional deficiency or something is going on that needs some attention.”
